The Earth Day Symposium (EDS) is an annual event hosted by the Atmospheric Physics (ATPH) and Geography and Environmental Systems (GES) departments. The symposium receives sponsorship from the UMBC Department of Physics and the Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research (GESTAR) II. It serves as a platform for local Earth science research and facilitates collaboration among UMBC and GESTAR-II researchers, graduate students, and other Earth science professionals.

The EDS was founded in 2017 by the UMBC Atmospheric Physics graduate program and has become a hallmark event. It is held annually around Earth Day in April and is a testament to the commitment of UMBC and GESTAR-II to advancing Earth science, fostering collaboration, knowledge dissemination, and community engagement.

The symposium covers a wide range of topics, including measuring the Earth system, theoretical studies, model forecasts and prediction, and educational outreach and community engagement. The event features presentations from esteemed speakers who provide comprehensive overviews of their groundbreaking research. Additionally, the symposium includes an engaging poster session, where both graduate and undergraduate participants share their insights in an informal setting.
