Tools

The Office of Sustainability invites you to explore the numerous data and tools that are available for you to learn more about sustainability both on campus and in general. Each tool listed below has a brief description and contains a link to the tool.

Carbon Footprint Calculator

A Carbon Footprint is a measurement of the total amount of Greenhouse Gases that are generated by our actions. UMBC compiles an annual Greenhouse Gas Report to measure how well the university is reducing its impact on the environment. This calculator is designed for members of the UMBC community to quickly calculate an estimation of their carbon footprint and to translate their tons of carbon into more common things like the number of cell phones charged.

Data Dashboard

The Data Dashboard is the official data repository for UMBC’s Office of Sustainability. Users can use the Tableau public dashboard to view, query, and download information related to climate action plan progress, energy, emissions, waste, and water.

EJ Screen @ UMBC

EJSCREEN is an environmental justice mapping and screening tool that provides EPA with a nationally consistent dataset and approach for combining environmental and demographic indicators. EJ Screen @ UMBC is designed as an interactive dashboard and companion to the Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool. The dashboard displays information about the 11 EJ indicators and UMBC’s demographics.

Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool

This tool is a “map-centric” application where the user can interact directly with the map or enable additional functionality by selecting widgets on the top banner. The tool is designed as a geographic companion for the EJ Screen @ UMBC Dashboard.

Green Buildings Tour

The Green Buildings Tour is a virtual photographic tour of UMBC buildings that are built to LEED standards and/or certified as LEED Buildings. Users can explore the different attributes of the buildings to learn what makes them “green” and to identify what those features look like.

This tool, a companion to the UMBC Climate Action Plan, allows users to explore the various natural hazards that may impact campus. Users can look through a series of maps and features which are designed to help the UMBC community better understand the implications of climate change.

Student Research Impacts

This data dashboard is designed to highlight various student research efforts and link those studies to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Visitors can search by academic department(s), SDG(s), or year(s) of reseach.

Purple Air – Air Quality Sensor

The air quality sensor is a real-time data logging air quality monitor for the campus. Users can view, query, and download PM 2.5 (particulate matter) data for the campus.

Waste 101 Quiz

This quiz is designed to serve as an informational reminder for the UMBC community about the correct way to dispose of their waste. Users are shown a collection of items and must correctly choose if that item is trash, recycling, compost, or plastic film recycling.
