Sustainability Themed ProveIt Finalists and voting next week

Voting is from May 4th - 6th

Prove-it is an annual grant competition sponsored by the Student Government. It asks students to submit ideas to improve our campus.

This year the two finalists for Prove-It are both focused on helping UMBC go green. Many of the past grant winners from the Green Space to the Garden to the Biodiesel Project all focused on improving our environment. We rely on our planet for every single aspect of our lives and health, and with alarming rates of pollution, deforestation, and destruction, students are eager to do something new, sustainable and innovative.

This years two finalists are no different.

Retriever Treasure is a program that would stop students from trashing their reusable items at the end of the year. From clothes to furniture to school supplies UMBC often finds perfectly useful items in the trash. And instead of sucking up more resources, buying reusable items will reduce environmental damage of buying new stuff. Retriever Treasure will collect items as students move out, and sell items at deeply discounted prices. Our own thrift store in the loop! Check them out on Facebook!

SOLARetrievers will help students spend more time outside, by providing UMBC with picnic tables, with power outlets charged by the sun. The tables will have solar panels built into the shade umbrellas, so we can do more outside. Plus, the solar power is a lot healthier for our lungs than the energy from burning coal and oil. By giving students the chance to plug directly into a solar station, they hope to spark an understanding of the importance of how we get our energy, and how much energy we use. Check them out on Facebook!

Voting will be available on http://sga.umbc.edu/proveit/ from May 4th - May 6th.
Vote for both projects to ensure they gain grant funding from SGA. To learn more about campus sustainability and find out how to pursue your green dreams, email sustainability@umbc.edu
