UMBC's FY 20 Greenhouse Gas Report

Take a detailed look at our progress towards net-zero!

Each year, UMBC measures the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the operation of our campus to better understand our direct contribution to the heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere – the gases contributing to global climate change. This basis informs our carbon reduction strategies and allows for tracking progress over time.

This newest greenhouse gas inventory covers emissions data from July 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2020 (Fiscal Year 2020). FY 20 GHG data is significantly different from previous years due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. De-densification of the campus and travel restrictions reduced approximately 7,037.78 MTeCO2 in Scope 3 emissions alone.

As a whole, net emissions for FY 2020 decreased to to 48,071.92 MTeCO2, resulting in a 44% reduction in emissions compared to the baseline year (2007). This reduction was driven in part by gains in building-level energy efficiency investments, operational efficiency of the Central Plant, improvements in the Maryland regional electricity grid, and the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits.
