Outside Air Quality
Explore our campus and regional air quality! This interactive map relies on government sensors and monitoring stations set-up by citizen scientists, including laboratories here on campus. The map is continuously refreshed with live data to give you an accurate snapshot of our local air quality.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions & Resources
Electricity, natural gas, and other energy resources provide us with lighting, heating, and cooling to ensure safe and productive environments for students, faculty, and staff. This energy use produces greenhouse gas emissions, and UMBC is continually working to reduce its emissions footprint. Check out the progress on our public emissions dashboard.
Campus Water Quality
UMBC maintains over 100 stormwater management features that create native habitats, support water quality, and mitigate flood risk. These include submerged wetlands, rain gardens, ponds, and much more. Students monitor campus water quality to see how our stormwater controls are performing.
The Built Environment
UMBC’s campus features many LEED certified green buildings and other sustainable infrastructure. Improving energy efficiency, decarbonizing, and transitioning to renewable energy sources reduces environmental impact, lowers operating costs, and demonstrates leadership in climate action.
The Natural World
UMBC occupies 512 acres within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The campus provides valuable ecosystem services including carbon sequestration, water management, and temperature regulation. Sustainable landscaping practices enhance environmental and human health and support campus resilience.
