Description
The Earth Day Symposium (EDS) is an annual event sponsored jointly by the UMBC Department of Physics and the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET) that highlights local Earth science research from NASA, NOAA, university, and private sector affiliates. The event aims to strengthen collaboration between UMBC and JCET researchers, graduate students, and the local Earth science community.
The EDS is broad in scope, with presentations about:
- Measuring the Earth system with remote sensors, field campaigns, and ground networks
- Theoretical studies in fundamental Earth physics, radiative transfer, weather, and climate
- Model forecasts and prediction using data assimilation, re-analysis, and ensemble modeling
- Educational outreach and Earth science community engagement
The EDS invites 20 speakers each year for 15 minute overview talks on their research. Graduate and external student participants participate in an informal poster session. At the end of the event, the participants may join brief laboratory tours to learn about active UMBC Earth science development and testing and watch a live weather balloon launch.
The EDS was founded in by UMBC Atmospheric Physics graduate program in 2017 and held annually around Earth Day in April.
The Third Annual Earth Day Symposium is on April 26th, 2019 from 9am-4pm in Physics 401 at UMBC Main Campus.
